Joys of Teaching in a Portable

So I love my portable. Really. It's larger than many of the classrooms inside the school. Plus, there is carpet on three of the walls. I add Velcro to the back of almost anything I need to hang on the wall. Displays go up and come down instantly.

There are downsides. No water, but we've adjusted to that one. It's a long trek inside to the restrooms, so we take regular breaks. The only real issue is the heater.

Today is the perfect example. It was a frigid 3.4 degrees outside when I arrived at 8 A.M. Inside, a brisk 55 degrees. Apparently, I have the oldest portable in the entire district. No joke. The original heating unit just can't keep up with mornings like today. So I borrowed a couple of space heaters and had the temp up to 57 degrees when the kids arrived. Needless to say, it was not ideal teaching conditions. So we quickly packed up everything we thought we'd need for the morning and marched inside to hold class inside the faculty room.

"They have pop in here!"

"Wow! The chairs roll."

"I wonder what's in the fridge?"

"This place is making me so hungry!"

All of these and other cute comments made the morning fun. But, since the teachers did need to eat lunch, we couldn't stay forever. Just before the first few classes went to lunch we packed up everything again and moved into one of the computer labs -- the other teachers we're so gracious to give up their time! We spent the remainder of the day in here.

Now, you might be asking, did they fix the heater? Since this is the fifth time they have been out since Jan. 3rd, let's hope so. If not, may be we'll try holding class in one of the open corral areas tomorrow. Of course, the only permanent fix would be replacing the heating unit. They might consider that come June, because you know I'll really need the heater then!
