Growing up, Memorial Day was always first and foremost a day of remembrance. I remember being little and going to Grandma Weight's home to pick roses, gladiolas and other flowers to take to the cemetery in empty tin cans. When we moved to Quail Hollow subdivision, Memorial Day took on greater importance since the cemetery was almost in our back yard. Family often stopped to visit before going over to the cemetery. We have continued the tradition in my own family. Since my dad past away before any of my children we're born, we use this time to retell stories of my dad and help my kids get to know him better.

This year we were also lucky enough to bump into my cousin Laurie and her family. Memorial Day really is a great time to remember and reconnect with loved ones.
